Rain tapped the kitchen window.
“Picnic ruined,” Arya said.
At the other window,
Jiya pressed both hands to the glass.
“Puddle growing,” she said.
Arya saw the wet blanket
still folded by the door.
Jiya saw a silver river
running along the curb.
Arya saw gray clouds.
Jiya saw one worm
making a very brave trip
across the path.
“It is still raining,” Arya said.
“Yes,” said Jiya.
They carried the blanket
to the living room.
They ate sandwiches
under the dining table.
The rain did not stop for them.
It did not need to.
After lunch,
the two sisters stood
at the same window.
The picnic was over.
The puddle was enormous.
